For those who dont know our family, the newest member, Lucas, was diagnosed with SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency). Also known as bubble boy disease. It's a rare, life threatening genetic disorder that leaves him with nearly no immune system.
After extensive testing and waiting in complete isolation, Lucas's medical team determined the underlying medical condition was Ligase IV syndrome, a less than 1 in a million condition. So rare in fact, only part of his condition was known. Meaning he had a completely undocumented case of this disorder.
With months of waiting in and out of the hospital, years of recovery left, and a mountain of full time medical responsibilities, I quit my full time job in the basin, bound for the best children's hospital and medical professionals the United States has to offer.
What followed was weeks of chemo, reactions, endless medications, a Bone Marrow Transplant, and contracting staph from his donor cells. We spent days wondering if every cough, sneeze, or puke, was the beginning of his last and patiently waited for his body to take on the donor's cells. He was in the same hospital room for 7 weeks.
Finally, he was discharged to local housing, only 5 blocks away from the hospital. However, within 36 hours out of the hospital, he began having a fever coupled by vomiting. After four midnight emergency room visits, he was once again admitted on June 11 to treat a mess of issues. Each week brought something new, including under eating, a lack of weight gain, oxygen need, kidney injury, fluid retention, and more.
Needless to say, the road has been rough, though we are tough, it still leaves us feeling left behind by the things we have missed. Doing what we must, we persevere and make do with what we have. With a laptop and a need to provide, we started a business with all of this in mind.
From an idea on the way home from work in the Permian basin, to launching this company from a hospital room in San Francisco. Born from hard times and quiet days, we started something we all have an opinion about.
